Greetings!

Gray KittenAs the early mist evaporated on August 28th, I could see the outlines of 14 Canada Geese, lounging and picnicking on the dewey green fields where I walk each morning.  They gather here every year around this time, in preparation for their winter migration.  Their arrival can only mean that summer days are waning, and there is always a bit of melancholy in that.

Yet there is much to look forward to as the pace quickens in September.  I'll be venturing over to Saratoga for part of Labor Day weekend, where Rachel Alexandra will be running in The Woodward on Saturday, September 5th.  It will be a thrill to see her, regardless of whether she is able to conquer the formidable male foes who will face her in this historic contest.

The following week, I'll be attending the Integrative Pet Health Expo, which will be held on September 10th and 11th in Fitchburg, MA.  It will feature some nationally known experts, including Dr. Marty Goldstein, Dr. Bob Goldstein and Susan Goldstein, Dr. Judith Shoemaker, and Dr. Allen Schoen, with panels on canine acupuncture, herbal medicine and cancer prevention and treatment, hospice care for animals, and many other cutting-edge topics.  Tickets are available for any of these events.

I hope you'll join me tonight when I have the pleasure of interviewing Kathleen Prasad of Animal Reiki Source, who will discuss her latest book, The Animal Reiki Handbook: Finding Your Way with Reiki in Your Local Shelter, Sanctuary or Rescue, as part of my monthly "Conversations with Animal Authors" teleconference series.  You can find instructions on how to join the call in the story at the end of this newsletter.

My special August $40 pricing for consultations with horses is in effect through midnight on Monday, August 31st.  If you're interested in getting in before the deadline, just be sure to send in your request by then.

Gray KittenIf you care about horses, you'll want to take a stand against the Bureau of Land Management's announced plan to cruelly round up and disperse the 200 or so wild horses in the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range in Montana, beginning on September 3rd, 2009.  This band of horses, known as Cloud's Herd, was made famous by filmmaker Ginger Kathrens in her memorable documentaries about the wild palomino stallion, Cloud, and the other horses who roam and run with him on public lands.

Under government auspices, these free-spirited horses will be chased and run down by helicopters, and there's no doubt that in addition to being terrified, many of them will be seriously injured or even killed in the process.

The Cloud Foundation and Front Range Equine Rescue have filed a lawsuit and a request for a preliminary injunction in the federal district court in Washington, DC to stop the roundup and removal of horses from the Range.   Click on any of these links for more information on how you can express your concern about the potential loss of Cloud and his kin.

Wishing you many September blessings.

From my heart to yours,

Maureen

The Animal Reiki Handbook

by Kathleen Prasad and SARA Members

Gray Kitten
As the leading Animal Reiki educator in the country for the last several years, Kathleen Prasad is a silent but very powerful revolutionary in the field of holistic healing for animals.  Her previous book, Animal Reiki: Using Energy to Heal the Animals in Your Life, co-written with Elizabeth Fulton, was the first to address this cutting-edge topic, and it remains the best.

Kathleen's latest mission is to support animal-loving Reiki practitioners who would like to ease the fear, stress, anxiety, grief, and sense of aloneness and helplessness that is experienced by dogs, cats, horses, and rabbits who, for various reasons, no longer have a home of their own.  Most are scarred; virtually all are scared.

With a scarcity of financial and human resources, shelters and sanctuaries are usually able to offer little more than kindness and the rudiments of physical sustenance to the creatures in their care.  The animals' emotional and spiritual needs are mostly unmet.

Until now.

With other like-minded colleagues, Kathleen has founded the Shelter Animal Reiki Association (SARA) to teach an understanding of energy healing, to provide a standardized approach to implementing professional Animal Reiki programs in shelters and sanctuaries, and to document the effects of this gentle intervention, not only on the animals themselves, but on the people who devote their days to caring for them.

The Animal Reiki Handbook: Finding Your Way With Reiki in Your Local Shelter, Sanctuary or Rescue, is the group's down-to-earth primer on how to introduce the practice of Reiki into a shelter environment, and on what to expect from both the captive cats and dogs and the volunteers and staff, many of whom will be unfamiliar with Reiki, and even skeptical of the usefulness of this modality, which flows unseen.

According to The Animal Reiki Handbook, Reiki "can maintain health and well-being on the physical, mental and emotional levels, induce deep relaxation and stress relief, accelerate healing in sick or injured animals, or animals recovering from surgery, help reduce pain and inflammation, help reduce behavior problems and aggression, help animals heal from past mental or physical trauma, complement conventional and alternative therapies," and even "support the dying process."

And perhaps most intriguingly, it is the animals themselves who control the Reiki treatment process, "taking only the amount of energy they wish to receive."

The challenges of bringing Reiki into a shelter environment can be formidable, and The Animal Reiki Handbook addresses them with realism and compassion.  Not only are there noises and interruptions that require the practitioner to stay centered and calm, but there are aggressive dogs, terrified cats, and suspicious horses who may initially want no part of what they perceive as unwelcome, or even threatening, intervention.  And in certain shelters, there is always the possibility that the animal who is receiving a Reiki treatment today may be euthanized tomorrow.

The Animal Reiki Handbook deals with all of these situations with grace, and ultimately, with a gentle reminder to the practitioner that, "You are there to create a healing and harmonic energetic space, not only for the animals, but also for anyone and everyone who is within that space and open to healing."   It is wonderful to contemplate how the quiet clarity of those called to work in shelters or sanctuaries as Animal Reiki volunteers will truly transform the lives of everyone within the range of their healing intent.

TRAINING CATS WITH TELEPATHY

Gray KittenIt may not be possible to use conventional behavioral modification techniques to teach cats what you'd like them to do, but a paradoxical cat named Louie taught me that the members of his species are quite open to telepathic suggestions, especially when they feel that their own feelings and concerns have been acknowledged and understood.

Louie's Mom, Sandra, was in a quandary when she first contacted me.  Louie had started biting her, for no apparent reason, and, perhaps even more distressing, he had begun to urinate in inappropriate places, including her bed!

When I tuned into Louie, I really got the feeling that he had a lot to share, and could almost feel him in my presence, even though we were hundreds of miles apart. When I "saw" him try to bite my thumb, I immediately recoiled, and I could sense that Louie suddenly understood that he had done something that could cause pain.  He let me know, though, that it was never his intention to hurt anyone.  Quite the contrary.  He just wanted to hold onto something.

And then something really interesting happened.  Louie started drawing attention to his right ear, and I sensed that he was trying to convey either a problem with his hearing, or possibly, that he was experiencing some dizziness or vertigo.  Sandra hadn't mentioned that, but when I spoke with her after the session, she confided that in fact, it was she who had been having dizzy spells of late, and that Louie had been biting her right ear!

I realized then that what had happened was that Louie was not only demonstrating his deep understanding of Sandra's health issues, but that his biting her ear was his not-so-subtle way of urging her to recognize them, too.

Within a few days after our session, Sandra began to notice a dramatic change in Louie's behavior.  "I was talking to him and petting him," she said, and "he turned to take a chomp, but instead of biting down, he just held his mouth open and then shut it.  I laughed and told him what a good, good boy he was."

In the weeks since then, Sandra reports that this same pattern has continued, and that Louie has not actually bitten her since we "talked."  It's clear that he not only "heard" my telepathic suggestion that his biting could be hurtful, but even more importantly, I think, he knew that Sandra had been made aware of his concern for her health, and he didn't need to keep biting her to get his message across.

Oh, and one more thing.  Louie has also stopped urinating on the bed!

A Word of Thanks
From an Appreciative Client

Gray KittenHathaway is a most remarkable calico cat who remains amazingly healthy and vibrant in her 20th year.

She let me know about some minor physical issues she was experiencing, which I shared with her person, Linda.

Hathaway's veterinarian later confirmed many of the things she'd said, and Linda felt that I had also captured her wonderful cat's personality.

She kindly wrote:

"I think your analysis is spot on. . .

On your advice I did take Hathaway to the vet and his findings support what you discovered.

She's no longer howling at me in the morning, so perhaps she just needed some reassurance!

I've told several of my friends how well you 'read' Hathaway and will continue to recommend you."

Have You Even Seen An Animal Show Compassion?

Gray Kitten

The responses to this survey easily flowed in, and not surprisingly, more than 80% of those who participated had indeed witnessed one or more examples of compassion by one animal towards another, or towards another person.

Thank you to everyone who shared their wonderful stories; I wish I could have reprinted them all.

But here's a sampling:

"I am a foster home for Brittany Spaniels.  Recently, I took in a
female who I named 'Kiley.'  She had recently had her front leg
amputated due to abuse.  She was having a hard time of it, and
one of the dogs that I had recently adopted decided that she
would become Kiley's new best friend.

Gabby would stay with Kiley in the yard, and she slept with her.
They became inseparable.  Kiley blossomed with Gabby's love."

And here's a great story--almost like ones we've seen on TV:

"My corgi/cattle dog cross found and raised a baby raccoon.
She cleaned her and let her nurse on her.  I bottle fed the
raccoon for a few days but after that, my dog got milk in
one of her teats and raised the raccoon herself."

When it came to animals showing empathy toward people--even people whom they've never met before--there were some real tear jerkers:

"Last year my husband died at home, from pancreatic cancer.  Our
Brittany spaniel, Cooper, was very sad, as he was not able to be in
the room with Louie, due to the medical people being there.

After Louie died, I allowed him to lay with Louie, just to say good-bye.
Cooper laid with Louie for about an hour, softly crying, and licking
Louie's face.  Then Cooper laid with me, as if to say, 'Don't worry.  I
now will take care of you.'"

And this one, which says everything you need to know about the compassion of animals:

"I was in the vet's office, waiting to go in with my dog, a boxer/
doberman cross.  She was obedience-trained, and knew not to
     jump up on people.

A 10-year-old boy came out of the office weeping, because they'd
just had to put his cat to sleep.  My dog broke her command to stay
and went to the boy, stood up on her hind legs until he acknowledged
her, then she wrapped her paws around his neck and cleaned his tears
while he hugged her.  Everyone in the office wept."

And so did I. . .

As always, the results will be shared in a forthcoming issue.

Have You Ever Been Visited by an Animal Now in Spirit?

Gray KittenDo you believe that animals live on in spirit after they die?
Have you ever been visited by one of your animals after he or she died?   If so, what form did the visitation take?

Did your animal's visit help you deal with his or her death?

Can you describe the circumstances of your animal's spirit visit, how you felt about it, whether you believed it was real, and how it changed your feelings about your animal's death.

Please share your very personal stories and participate in our survey by clicking on the link below.

I'll be reprinting a sampling of them in next month's issue!

photo - Maureen
There are so many ways to communicate with animals, as these stories attest.  Animals are natural telepathic communicators, and it's because they're so good at it that I can "hear" them.

If you think that you and your animal would benefit from a
telepathic consultation, please drop me a note or give me a call.

Until Next Time!
